California inks deal for new system after COVID data backlog

LOS ANGELES (AP) — About a month after California disclosed its COVID-19 tracking system had produced inaccurate case numbers, state officials awarded a $15 million contract Tuesday to a software company to design a successor capable of collecting greater amounts of more detailed data on the spread of the virus.

Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly said in an online briefing that the current system was not designed to handle the work that came with the outbreak in California, which has more cases than any other state.

The replacement, to be developed by OptumInsight Inc., will be “built to really handle that high volume of test results, both negatives and positives,” he said.

Paired with a recently announced expansion in testing, the state intends to collect more data, packed with greater detail. That should allow officials to gather a greater range of demographic information, that in turn will allow

Jenny and Sumit are a standout couple in the TLC franchise given their drama-filled journey during season 1 of 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way. Jenny, 61, fell in love with 32-year-old Sumit online after they connected on Facebook. Sumit admittedly catfished Jenny at first by using a model’s pictures in his profile, though Jenny accepted him when she found out what he really looked like. Jenny ended up leaving Palm Springs, California, to live with Sumit in India, but was shocked when she learned that he was actually already married. Sumit didn’t tell Jenny he was in an arranged marriage, and

During our first talk, Cline had seemed uncomfortable on-screen, blushing and chuckling nervously in her un-air-conditioned Silver Lake bedroom. Luckily, Zoom kept freezing up, and after 25 minutes we ditched it for

Critics want Twitter to halt its trending lists. Instead, Twitter will make tweaks.

Twitter announced Tuesday that it plans to make a series of small changes to its trending topics feature to try to improve the quality of information users see, a decision that sidesteps growing calls for Twitter to remove the lists altogether for fueling hoaxes and conspiracy theories.

To start, Twitter said in a blog post, it would provide more context for trending topics by selecting a “representative tweet” for some trends. A combination of computer algorithms and a human curation team wouldchoose the tweet, according to the company.

“To be clear, we know there is more work to do to improve trends and the context updates we’re announcing today are just a small step in the right direction,” Twitter said in the post from Frank Oppong, a product manager, and Liz Lee, a product trust partner.

For years, the lists of what’s trending on Twitter have caused regular headaches. There
