Summary

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Planning and Project Management, Construction Division, Construction Branch. The Construction Division’s workforce supports construction and renovation efforts throughout the Capitol Hill campus. The selectee will serve as a Mason Leader leading three or more workers to accomplish masonry work.

*** Please Note: This position is temporary in nature and is not to exceed 13 months. This is strictly a temporary appointment where there is no permanent need or permanent funding available for the work involved. It is a position that is subject to the project needs of the Agency. Therefore, the appointment could be terminated at any time due to shortage of work or shortage of funds without any advance notice. If project work continues however, it could be extended beyond the 13 month time frame at the sole discretion of the Agency. As a non-permanent employee, you may also be separated for failure to meet management’s expectations, with no advance notice. ***

Major Duties:

Plans, lays out, leads, and direct the work on major construction and repair jobs. Distributes masonry tasks to be performed by employees in the work group. Work along with the employees to set the pace. Ensures that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available and that materials are obtained. Obtains necessary information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work shift. Make sure that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy; checks work while in progress and when finished, check to see whether the supervisors’ instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been followed. Update the supervisors on status and progress of work and causes of delay. Answers supervisors’ questions on the overall work operations and problems.

Complies with all OSHA safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. Receives training, either on the job or through classroom training, to ensure that all safety practices and equipment are fully utilized. Must ensure the use of any required Personal Protective Equipment.

Repairs the interior and exterior marble of the buildings and grounds. Cuts and cleans surfaces using high pressure chemical washers. Repoints joints, resets loose stone, caulks, waterproofs and repairs terrazzo flooring.

Where needed after renovations, builds new walls and reconfigures existing walls that may be made up of different kinds of stone, block, and/or brick. Cuts, polishes, cleans, and matches various materials including marble, granite, and limestone. Repairs and finishes stone walls and trim using decorative designs.

Lays curved or circular structures using adobe, block, brick, and stone. Repairs and maintains terrazzo and tile. As required, demolishes staircases and masonry walls. Cuts openings in walls and lays brick and concrete block.
