Nicole Kidman is marking the 20th anniversary of the musical, Moulin Rouge!, on Instagram with photos from the film and artwork from fans.
Moulin Rouge! has turned 20 years old, and Nicole Kidman took to Instagram to celebrate the occasion with throwback photos and fan art. The 2001 musical romantic drama is set in Paris and takes place slightly more than a century before the film’s release. It stars Kidman as Satine, a cabaret actress and courtesan, alongside Ewan McGregor as Christian, an English poet. The two characters meet and begin a complicated and ultimately tragic love story.
Moulin Rouge! is equally known for its music as its love story. The film put its own spin on iconic songs, such as Elton John’s “Your Song” and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Christina Aguilera, Mýa, P!NK, and Lil’ Kim recorded their own version of Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade” for the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack. The Moulin Rouge! version of the song won a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. The film also took home some hardware at the Oscars for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Costume Design. Although Kidman didn’t win an Oscar for her performance as Satine, she did receive a Best Actress nomination.

Two decades after the film’s release, the star still has fond memories of Moulin Rouge!. Kidman posted a series of photos from the movie on Instagram along with a heartfelt caption. The caption includes one of the most recognizable lines from the film, which is, “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return.” Check out Kidman’s full Instagram post below:
Kidman didn’t just dedicate one post to the anniversary, she also posted a video of herself reacting to Moulin Rouge! fan art. “Oh my gosh, I love these! I want them all. You’re all so talented. Please, send in more. I cannot believe that this film inspired all of this,” she said. Kidman paired the video with another caption, in which she thanked writer-director, Baz Luhrmann, producer-art director-costume designer, Catherine Martin, McGregor, and the rest of the cast and crew. Kidman’s second post can be viewed below:
After wrapping Moulin Rouge!, both Kidman and McGregor said they knew they made something special, but audiences don’t always agree with those directly connected to a film. However, based on the high quantity of artwork Kidman re-posted, it is clear that Moulin Rouge! remains a beloved film among audiences, even 20 years after it hit theaters. The enduring love for this film isn’t surprising considering it features great music, acting, sets, and costumes with a great love story surrounding it all. Moulin Rouge! has been remembered for two decades, and it will likely be remembered for many decades still to come.
