In our scientific opinion, Travelpro manufactures the best checked luggage. To start, it has a more luxe feel than some of the other pricier pieces we tested, plus generous storage space for bulky items. Its high-quality wheels easily maneuvered our obstacle course, and the bag also comes with a built-in toiletry bag and garment bag to channel your inner Marie Kondo.

2. This Macy’s bestseller available in four colors
Luggage staple Samsonite offers a 10-year warranty on these 24-inch hardside spinners, so you know the company stands behind their durability. There’s a built-in ID tag and a recessed lock to secure your belongings, plus the sides expand another inch and a half to fit in any souvenirs you pick up on your trip.
As for the wheels, in one of the nearly 700 5-star reviews, a Macy’s shopper claims: “This carry-on rolls smoothly, even when traveling through a crowded busy airport where you are stopping short and twisting and turning to get around people.”
You can also get a 21-inch carry-on and a larger 28-inch suitcase—though at the moment they’re only available in black.

3. A popular Nordstrom item with a marble effect
Book a domestic flight? According to the product description, this Calpak suitcase will satisfy most U.S. airliners’ carry-on dimensions so you can be assured you won’t be hit with checked baggage fees. Aside from a trendy marble print, it sports interior elastic, mesh and zippered pockets, and it even expands for some extra wiggle room (though you may have to check it on account of the larger dimensions). It’s currently in stock in white and black patterns.
One Nordstrom shopper wrote: “I just went on a trip to Europe, and let me tell you: This suitcase went in planes, trains, subways, ferries, taxis and all over cobblestone streets with me. For a carry-on, it fits a lot and the lock gave me peace of mind while I was staying in a hostel. I saw it being thrown around and was nervous that it would crack or break, but it still looks perfect.”
The best news: It’s 40% off during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale that runs through August 8.

4. Spacious bags from social-media darling Away
We put the Away expandable large suitcase through the ringer in our luggage comparison tests and approved of its smooth spinner wheels. There’s a water-resistant laundry bag and a TSA-approved lock, as well as a leather luggage tag that’s integrated into the suitcase’s polycarbonate exterior. At the moment, the 26-inch expandable medium is available in navy, black and gray.
We’ve also taken the brand’s Bigger carry-on for a spin, and it’s currently in stock in five colors, including the popular millennial pink. Keep in mind: If you want to add a monogram on the luggage tag or suitcase body, it may take a big longer to ship the product, and these personalized touches mean skipping the 100-day trial period. Either way, Away customers are covered by a limited lifetime warranty.
5. A glossy, durable spinner from QVC
If you purchase this sturdy carry-on, you have options to suit your style: It’s available in three solid colors and six patterns, including leopard and an abstract camouflage.
Once you open the shiny, textured suitcase, the interior features funky polka dots as well as dividers to keep everything just where it should be. In addition to a TSA-accepted lock, it’s equipped with a matching hard-shell beauty case that can loop onto your handle to help you breeze through airport security.

6. A softsided suitcase with a 10-year warranty
These Samsonite suitcases are built for the long haul, as they’re made with a performance fabric and covered by a 10-year warranty. The exterior features a zippered pocket, retractable ID tag and ergonomic zippers, while the interior includes a removable pocket that’s meant for stowing liquids.
You can choose between a 21-inch carry-on spinner that’s available in charcoal (and according to Samsonite meets size requirements for most major airlines). There’s also a 25-inch softside spinner in charcoal or emerald. Most appealing: At the moment, both sizes are more than half off at Macy’s.
While one reviewer mentions the handy padded laptop storage, another notes the durability: “I’ve had one of these for nine years, and it’s traveled quite a lot. I can tell it’s been thrown and tossed around by the airline workers but it is intact. It is durable and so light. I will stick to Samsonite for life.”

8. A hard-shell suitcase that can stand up to tough love
If you’re looking for a hard-shell suitcase and have a bigger budget, we have a lot of great things to say about this Briggs and Riley expandable spinner, which earned a spot on our list of best checked luggage.
The exterior is scratch-resistant—our tester hit it with a hammer—while the inside boasts several zippered pockets and mesh panels to compress your folded clothes. We also think it has some of the most user-friendly carry handles we’ve encountered. The manufacturer places them off-center, which means your arm can hang closer to your body while you tote it around.
These features will cost you, but the stellar suitcase is covered by Briggs and Riley’s lifetime warranty. Choose between black, navy and plum at multiple retailers.
9. This QVC bestseller with shiny gold hardware
This hard-shell suitcase made of glossy polycarbonate features gold hardware and a built-in digital scale to help you avoid excess baggage fees. At 25 inches, you’ll have to check it when flying, but it’s equipped with a TSA-approved lock to keep your valuables safe—plus it expands to fit your tchotkes on the way home.
Scoop it up in solids like navy and lilac, as well as floral, marble and leopard prints to stand out from the crowd.

10. A hard-shell spinner in several colors
This hardside iFly luggage is available in 20, 24, and 28 inches and there’s even more choices when it comes to color, including bright white, hunter green, shiny silver and soft pastels like mint, blush and ombre cotton candy. Some of the colorways feature rose gold hardware for extra flash. Inside you’ll find small and large zip compartments for organizing your stuff, and adjustable straps to keep goods in place. Plus, the manufacturer offers a 10-year warranty.
From nearly 11,000 reviews, the set has a 4.6-star rating. Says one reviewer: “I bought the middle size piece for a quick getaway and loved it so much now I have the entire set. This luggage is very sturdy and moving through the airport is a breeze with the smooth gliding wheels. It was handled pretty rough with the small marks on the surface, but they wiped right off.”

11. A luxury checked bag at a discounted price
Luxury brand Tumi is known for its high quality—and high prices. But right now, its extended stay 33-inch hardside spinner is 40% off at Nordstrom Rack. Shoppers have their pick between a rich blue and red.
For those who find themselves overseas, the 22-inch carry-on meets most international requirements. And you’ll find a few more sizes and colors at Saks Off 5th, including a 28-inch version in silver.
Here’s what one owner had to say: “These are durable and attractive. I have several for my family and absolutely love this new color—it’s a very deep, dark red. Wheels work fantastic. Zero issues with the handle. Has a lock you can set with your own three digits. I recommend this suitcase for travelers who want a light suitcase that easily fits into the overhead when flying or just taking a weekend trip.”
